"A Young Fans' Dream That Came True"

STORY This is an experience that I will NEVER forget. Some of our fan club members and friends decided to go to the State Fair. I really wasn't all that interested in the fair as I had been there a couple of years back, so I just went along and nobody knew RM was there. It was opening day and being a horse lover, we went over to watch the horses line up for the competition. When the riders mounted their horses nobody said a word. They were probably thinking what I was. It can't be who I think it is, so I just won't say anything. He was dressed as a cow boy with a red scarf on and dark glasses. It was a bright sunny day so they were needed. We suddenly noticed that the crowd had more than doubled and were staying around the horses. It was still early and things were just getting ready to start. (We had decided to go early, long before it started) That turned out to be a real plus on this occasion as we were right up front leaning on the fence. When the competition started I was then sure why opening day was suddenly so crowded. Word got out fast and Timomium,Md. became a traffic nightmare, for those who came just after the opening or later. After the events with the horses (he had 3) were over and he got them settled down, he very casually walked over to the fence and leaning on it he was very generous with his time and autographs. Standing across from him you can see what a big man in perfect condition, that he was. His hands alone, leaning on that fence, were larger than anyone I knew and then there were those broad shoulders. Trying to be casual while looking at that handsome face and those deep blue eyes, was almost impossible. I barely got the words out while speaking to him. We were the last ones to leave, giving the excuse that we were waiting for our other friends. We waited until he walked away back to where the horses were, as only Mitch can with that interesting walk, knowing he'd be gone after that and all of the people that went to the fair for the rest of the two weeks, would not see him. He was only there for opening day, but what a thrill he brought to all of us who were there. Our imaginations went wild for months! Shortly after that he sold the ranch, because he had several films to do in London and also In Ireland, and he said it was too far to travel there, back to California, and back to the Eastern Shore. Never again would he live in our state, but we would always have the memories of that one brief afternoon at the fair. He was always good to his fans young and old, always replied to our requests for pictures and he always wrote something personal like your name or a brief message, along with his autograph. That's the story...exactly how it happened.
